The 2024 Awards Evening and AGM was held on Monday 30th September, again kindly hosted by 245 Hammersmith Road, winner of a Nancye Goulden Award in 2021 for the landscaping.
The 2023 minutes and 2024 accounts were formally approved as part of the AGM process. Committee re-elections were completed with the changes outlined in the agenda
We are sad to see our president, Prof Hans Haenlein retire after a lifetime nurturing the Society from its inception in 1962, and we are forever grateful for his inspiring work. He had already moved to Sussex, and was therefore unable to attend the AGM, but we hope to hold a celebration at a future date. Longstanding committee member, Robert Iggulden decided to stand down this year also, and we thank him for his service. It should be noted that we still have a vacancy for the role of Hon. Secretary. Please contact the chairman if you are interested in helping the committee in this role, or in any other way.
This year our guest speaker was Sally Prothero, chair of the planning and conservation working group of the London Historic Parks & Gardens Trust, which aims to increase knowledge and appreciation of parks, squares, community gardens, cemeteries and churchyards in London. Her illustrated talk, London’s parks and open spaces at risk, focussed on their work in reviewing planning proposals with a view to protecting London’s green spaces from harmful development, including familiar subjects to us, such as 5G masts. She talked in detail about the particular case study of the grade II* listed Victoria Tower Gardens, adjacent to the Palace of Westminster, where it’s been proposed to build the UK’s controversial Holocaust Memorial and learning centre for some time. In summary “Right idea, Wrong place” due to historic covenants, the setting of the existing Buxton Memorial Fountain, and the large percentage of space proposed to be consumed.
Vice-Chairman Richard Winterton reviewed this year’s nominations in some detail, and the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Daryll Brown subsequently presented the Awards. The narrative, with details of the winning projects, can be found on the Awards page.
Vice-chair, Richard Winterton, briefly presented a summary of the chairman’s annual report in his absence due to COVID. The full report can be found below.
