The 2023 Awards Evening and AGM was held on Thursday 29th June, kindly hosted by 245 Hammersmith Road, winner of a Nancye Goulden Award in 2021 for the landscaping.
The 2022 minutes and 2023 accounts were formally approved as part of the AGM process. Committee re-elections were completed with the changes outlined in the agenda, and it should be noted that we currently have a vacancy for the role of Hon. Secretary. Please contact the chairman if you are interested in helping the committee in this role, or in any other way.
This year, our guest speaker was our MP, Andy Slaughter. He talked about his 40 years in Hammersmith, starting as a local councillor for Gibbs Green and West Ken, though to deputy, then leader in 1996, earning his Twitter name @Hammersmithandy.
Aiming to steer clear of overtly party-political issues, he talked about the various battles over the West Ken. estates that were originally given over to CAPCO for redevelopment as part of Earls Court, then reclaimed, the continuing issues with the local Charing Cross Hospital, the Bridge, flooding, and then onto large developments and the general pace of redevelopment, with a specific discussion on Shepherds Bush Market. He also mentioned that with the recently confirmed electoral boundary changes, his constituency was, not for the first time, being radically reshaped to lose the northern half to Ealing, while he might gain Chiswick in the new ‘Hammersmith & Chiswick’ constituency should he be elected next time. He subsequently answered a number of questions from the audience, including a topical one about Thames Water.
After thanking him, the Chairman, knowing his publicly declared interest in fire safety with reference to Grenfell and Charecroft Estate fires, handed him a rather worthless but nonetheless significant token – a crimp connector of the same type that was identified as starting the Grenfell fire. It subsequently featured in Hansard as part of the building safety debate a week or so later.

Vice-Chairman Richard Winterton reviewed this year’s nominations in some detail, and Andy Slaughter subsequently presented the two Awards. The narrative, with details of the winning projects, can be found on the Awards page.
The Chairman, Richard Farthing, presented a summary of his annual report, covering the top 5 significant projects, education matters, including the CSP campaign, transport matters including C9 and the related CAN plans, as well as Hammersmith Society matters. The full report can be found below.
Committee member Robert Iggulden then described how he is leading the effort to better communicate and collaborate with our affilates, post-COVID.
Committee, members, Award winners, and guests, including MP Andy Slaughter gathered afterwards for a convivial reception.
