Winners of the 2019 Awards were introduced by committee member Derrick Wright and presented by the Society’s President, Hans Haenlein – please see the 2019 awards page for the narrative and photos of the projects. This year, we had two guest speakers:
Trevor Morriss of Architects SSPARC gave a detailed talk on the history and plans for redevelopment of Olympia. Later we were invited to view the model of the proposed plans in the refurbished Upper Pillar Hall, which is planned to become a restaurant and Jazz Club eventually, complementing the two hotels at the Northern and Southern ends of the site. Olympia will remain open during the redevelopment which will complete in 4-5 years time.
Mark Rintoul of RSHP also gave a detailed description of the ongoing work to complete the design for the redevelopment of Town Hall (King Street West). Work to demolish the ugly 1970’s Town Hall extension is expected to start in the Autumn, when staff have decanted to other buildings.
In a Q&A session, Councillor Wesley Harcourt (Cabinet Member for the Environment) gave us an impromptu update on the Hammersmith Bridge situation.
