The Hammersmith Society inaugurated its annual awards scheme in 1989. Its purpose is to recognise improvements in the borough’s townscape, whether a new building, an imaginative renovation or adaptation of an old building, the creation or improvement of a green open space, a well-designed streetscape, an improved shopfront, or the removal of an eyesore.
The Awards are keenly sought, if a new scheme – large or small – makes a positive and beneficial contribution to our townscape, we invite anyone living or working in Hammersmith (as defined by the old Metropolitan Borough, the upper 8 wards of H&F). to nominate it by the Spring deadline shown in our diary. Schemes must have been completed within the last two to three years, and must be visible from the public highway or accessible to the public. Like Civic Voice, we do not let architects/developers submit their own projects, the awards are about members celebrating high quality local developments.
The committee short-lists the nominations and visits them in mid May. The winners will receive a stainless steel or polished brass plaque and a certificate presented at the AGM, usually held in June. An example of the stainless steel plaque can be seen in the 2009 winner here.
On occasion, we have also given a Special Award, for schemes, including publicly accessible interiors, which are not otherwise included in other award categories. Note also that it is perfectly possible for developments to be nominated in multiple categories, some divide opinion !
