Tree watering bag (Barcham) We were pleased to see the council replace some dead street trees in King Street and elsewhere in early 2021, but they sadly forgot to provide a means to keep them watered. It’s estimated to take 20L a week to get a new tree established, watering bags are often provided around saplings for this reason – example shown. This tree planting exercise wasted precious council tax : an additional £19 spent with each tree’s vendor, and some TLC, would have saved them. We adopted the sapling opposite Tesco last summer, and persuaded local restaurants to do similar for others nearby, but it appears to have been too late by the time we noticed their parlous condition. We awarded wooden spoons to the council for poor tree pits in 2013, 2014 and 2015 – this sadly continues a story of arboricultural neglect. |

Campaigning for over sixty years
A wooden spoon for CS9 is far too polite. Based on the increased accident data, the award should have been a wooden ambulance. Based on the degree of honesty and consultation, the award should have been a wooden ear and a twisted tongue; and based on the added pollution and poor value for money, a wooden toilet!
The so called green project on Sawley Road is not so green. They are responsible for hacking away great chunks of privet hedge that are very important for wildlife and also a feature of the conservation area. They have not consulted local people with their random, messy planting and have destroyed the grassy corners where the daffodils were a delight every spring. They should get a wooden spoon!
Thanks for your comment, which we’ll consider when deciding awards.
