We are Hammersmith’s only borough-wide dedicated amenity society. Our membership includes both individuals and affiliated local groups interested in improving the built and natural environment in Hammersmith. As such, we represent over 3500 members & affiliates, and campaign and work with public, local and national authorities for improvements to the townscape. Our area of interest is the Metropolitan Borough of Hammersmith at the time the society was created in 1962 (approximately the upper 8 wards of the current London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham). The other half of the borough is addressed by the Fulham Society.
Our main areas of activity are:
We are actively interested on behalf of all Hammersmith residents and workers in such matters as proposals for new development schemes, the preservation of beautiful buildings and their surroundings, parks and trees, the use of open spaces, our stretch of the Thames, the problems of road traffic and parking, noise and pollution.
We want to make Hammersmith a safer, more convenient and better place in which to live, work and enjoy ourselves; and to influence the Local Authority, the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, to accept greater and genuine public participation. One of the ways we encourage this is by making annual Awards to the best and worst schemes, which we showcase on our website and on social media. Naturally, we support a #Retrofirst approach to development, appropriate for our climate-challenged times.
The Hammersmith Society is an unincorporated association, a member of the London Forum of Civic and Amenity Societies and a founder member of the West London River Group.
We work closely with the Hammersmith & Fulham Historic Buildings Group and other affiliated groups
