Hans Haenlein remembers some early successes of the 1960s and 1970s An amenity society like ours forms a necessary bridge between the public and the local authority for an exchange of ideas and for informed discussion of alternative planning possibilities The Society’s job is to be actively interested on behalf of all Hammersmith residents in such matters as the proposals for new development schemes and buildings in the area, the preservation of beautiful buildings and their surroundings, parks and trees, the allocation of open spaces, the problems of road traffic and parking, of noise and pollution, of large and tall buildings, etc. In short, we endeavour to help make Hammersmith a safer, more convenient and better-looking place in which to live, work and enjoy ourselves. To achieve this we try to promote as much public interest as possible in planning, architecture and kindred subjects and to influence the Local Authority towards a greater acceptance of real public participation in the planning process.

Transport for London TfL is progressing its Better Junctions and Cycle Superhighway proposals for the Broadway and Town Centre in conjunction with the Council’s Highways Department. There have been concerns raised over various issues including bus lanes in Beadon Road and further consultations are due to take place at the end of June. The long term ambition for the Flyunder is still part of the Local Plan but needs further and more committed engagement by TfL.
For years the long held ambition for a continuous riverside walk from Chiswick to Putney Bridge has been thwarted by the presence of Queen’s Wharf and Riverside Studios involving a detour along Crisp Road. At last the final section in front of Queen’s Wharf and the new Studios has been completed and opened.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, today announced plans for 10 more Low Emission Bus Zones deploying the greenest buses on the capital’s most polluted routes to cut harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. This is in addition to the two zones already announced at Putney High Street and between Brixton and Streatham. The zones are expected to reduce NOx emissions from buses along the routes by around 84 per cent. They form part of the Mayor’s hard-hitting measures to tackle London’s air, with major plans set to be implemented in 2017 to tackle the dirtiest vehicles.
